However, Cartagena completely shattered those preconceived notions.

There was no trace of those negative connotations in this vibrant city. The streets are immaculate and well-maintained, exuding a charm that immediately draws you in. Cartagena is historically rich, culturally inviting, and bursting with life. Its colorful facades, adorned with bright flowers and intricate designs, were one of the aspects that captivated me the most.

Our tour guide first brought us to San Felipe Fortress https://fortificacionescartagena.com.co/en/, an iconic structure built in 1657 by the Spanish to defend the city from pirates and other invaders. The fortress offered the best view of the whole city, giving us a panoramic perspective of Cartagena’s beauty and historical significance.

Next, we visited Las Bóvedas, a series of dungeons constructed in the late 18th century, which have now been transformed into lovely shops selling handicrafts, souvenirs, and art. Walking through this area was like stepping through history while enjoying the vibrant local culture.

We also had the chance to tour the walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within its historic streets, we visited Pedro Claver Church, where the remains of Saint Pedro Claver rest. Known as the “Slave of the Slaves,” Pedro Claver dedicated his life to ministering to enslaved Africans brought to Cartagena. His compassion and commitment to human dignity left an indelible mark on the city’s history.
