Transiting the Panama Canal aboard the Island Princess was an unforgettable experience, as we journeyed from the Caribbean side to the Pacific side. This iconic passage through the historic Panama Canal, which first opened in 1914, is one of the greatest engineering feats of the 20th century. Spanning approximately 50 miles, the canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, revolutionizing global trade and transportation.

My day began early—I woke up before 6:00 a.m., eager to secure a prime viewing spot at the bow of the ship. A friend joined me in this early morning adventure, and together we set off to find the perfect vantage point.

Our first stop was the Horizon Court, but to our dismay, all the forward-facing seats were already occupied. Undeterred, we headed to the top deck of the cruise ship and found the last two available spots. From there, we had an incredible view of the transit through the first lock. Watching the ship enter the lock and begin the process was mind-boggling. The sheer precision and engineering marvel behind the canal’s operation left us in awe.

However, our perfect moment was interrupted by rain. Reluctantly, we left our spots and decided to grab breakfast instead. After enjoying our meal, I returned to our mini-suite, which was conveniently located on the starboard side of the ship. With a private balcony at our disposal, I was able to witness the canal transit from an entirely different perspective.

It was fascinating to observe the ship’s progress through the locks. What amazed me the most was how the massive vessel managed to avoid scraping against the lock walls. I learned that this was thanks to the mechanical “mules”—powerful locomotives that guide the ship and keep it centered within the lock. Watching these mules in action, I gained a new appreciation for the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal.

Experiencing the transit from both the top deck and the privacy of our balcony provided a comprehensive view of this incredible feat of human ingenuity. The seamless combination of history, innovation, and breathtaking views made this journey through the historic Panama Canal truly unforgettable.
